Time to Advocate: Empowering Youth Through Active Engagement
Through the “Time to Advocate!” project, we had a unique opportunity to delve into the intricate connection between advocacy and youth participation. This initiative served as a platform that highlighted the irreplaceable link between all of us, emphasizing the significant role young people play in shaping societies worldwide. By engaging in advocacy, young people can contribute to civic life, lend their voices to issues they deeply care about, and actively shape their communities and society as a whole.
At its core, this project focused on leveraging digital tools as a means of youth engagement, recognizing that young individuals need tailored opportunities to participate in democratic processes that align with their age, background, and lifestyle. Digital tools offer a range of innovative ways to connect, discuss relevant issues, and participate in decision-making. The “Time to Advocate!” project ardently advocated for inclusive digital education for youth, aiming to prevent their alienation and transform online platforms into hubs of their active participation.
A youth exchange within the Erasmus+ program in Weicherdange, Luxembourg, brought together 40 enthusiastic participants, fostering an environment dedicated to empowering young people to become effective “advocates” within their communities and Europe as a whole.
The project was a mosaic of various impactful events and experiences that left an indelible mark on every participant. One such event was an online webinar led by Salto PI, titled “Promoting Active Participation and Volunteering of Young People: Can They Influence the 2024 European Parliament Elections?” The webinar, honored by the participation of an MEP, a representative of the European Youth Unit, and a member of the European Youth Forum, provided profound insights into the potential impact of youth participation on key events such as European elections.
Furthermore, a workshop held in collaboration with Amnesty International Luxembourg was a moving experience. We learned not only about the importance of advocating for people's rights but also gained firsthand experience and real-life cases that highlighted the power and necessity of standing up for what we believe in, in the context of human rights protection anywhere in the world.
The COP conference simulation was a unique opportunity that allowed us to engage in policy-making and advocacy. This exercise enabled us to understand the complexities of influencing global issues and projecting the consequences of policy decisions on the anticipated increase in global temperature.
In addition, the creation of online campaigns using the GAMMMA+ method to advocate for European Youth Goals was a practical experience that allowed us to utilize innovative approaches in advocating for critical objectives.
We are immensely grateful to the host organization Youthfully Yours for allowing us to be part of this transformative experience. This project not only broadened our horizons but also instilled in us a sense of responsibility and enthusiasm to actively engage in advocacy initiatives. We wholeheartedly encourage other young people to seek out similar opportunities, as they have the potential to shape not only our individual lives but also the world we live in. It is truly “Time to Advocate!” for a better tomorrow, and we look forward to continuing this journey of active participation and positive change.
