Come and Recycle! - second meeting
Our second meeting of the Come and Recycle project was on the topic of ZERO WASTE. One of the most discussed topics today, not only in the field of environment. Increasingly relevant. It is not enough to just separate waste and then recycle it. The most important thing is not to create it. Unfortunately, this is not entirely possible, as we learned during the lecture. However, we can significantly reduce it. But most of us must get involved. If we want to live in a better world, we must start with ourselves. As Mahatma Gandhi himself said: "Be the change you wish to see in the world."
We prepared a simple question for the participants using Mentimeter. We were interested in what they already knew about the concept of zero waste.
Most of the answers were - not to create waste. But is this really possible? Even the author of the book Zero Waste Home, Bea Johnson, who is considered one of the pioneers in this field, admits that she does create waste. Approximately one canning jar per year. If we didn't want to create waste and have a zero carbon footprint, we would have to limit ourselves a lot. But what we can do is limit this creation. Among many other pieces of information, lecturer Veronika Hagelová from IBM Slovakia revealed to us how to achieve this!
Veronika provided us with tips and tricks on how to create as little waste as possible, introduced us to her initiatives at IBM and in the place where she lives, and in an engaging way explained the point of the zero waste movement. Our 36 participants liked this and showered Veronika with many questions. For example, we found out what a great idea it is to have a home composter, which greenfluencers are good to follow, and how we can create greener offices.
The meeting was primarily attended by young people, mostly from 15 to 19 years old, most of whom came from our partner schools - Gymnázium Park mládeže 5 in Košice and Gymnázium Konštantínova 2 in Prešov. We are very pleased about this, because they were our target group, which needs to be educated. It is precisely they who will build the future of our planet. And as a bonus, several participants wrote to us that they also noticed us from FB and our personal stories on IG.
At the end of the meeting, we did one more activity, this time using Jam board. We were interested in what they took away from the lecture, so we asked them the question - How can we limit our production?
The answers were diverse, and we are convinced that the participants will adopt several of them.
After the Jam board, we did a quiz using Kahoot!. The winner received a great book on the topic.
We also created a platform for our participants where they can find the presentation and individual photos from this meeting. So they can go through everything again, and if they accidentally forgot something, they can quickly find it out.
