Come and Recycle! - first meeting

So we did it... on Wednesday 17.2.2021 at 17:00 we launched our project Come and Recycle. After introductory words about the project and why we decided to do it, we also took a moment to introduce the European Solidarity Corps, which is managed in Slovakia by IUVENTA - Slovak Youth Institute.

Immediately after the introductory speech, we delved into the rules and then into the first activity, with which we wanted to find out what expectations and fears the participants had. In the picture you can see what their answers were.

So we saw the expectations, there was nothing left for us but to fulfill them as best as possible. Ms. Slavomíra Brzová from the company Kosit a.s. gave us an excellent lecture on the topic of recycling. Interesting, full of important information and entertaining, these are the adjectives that best describe Ms. Brzová's words.

Did you know, for example, that an average person in Slovakia produces 435kg of waste per year? Or that from 30 collected plastic bottles we can have a new fleece jacket?

We already know that. And also what kind of waste belongs in individual containers. With a large number of participants - 40 - we even had trouble paying attention to the length of the meeting. Despite our efforts, the meeting was extended by about half an hour. But the lecture was valuable to the last minute.

We believe that most participants took away from the lecture what they wanted and needed. Proper segregation is the first step towards greener tomorrows. The acquired information will probably be shared by participants at home, in the family, among siblings.

The meeting was primarily attended by young people predominantly aged 15 to 19, most of whom came from our partner schools - Gymnázium Park mládeže 5 in Košice and Gymnázium Konštantínova 2 in Prešov. Which makes us very happy, because they were our target group, which needs to be educated. It is they who will build the future of our planet. And as a bonus, several participants wrote to us that they also noticed us from FB and our personal stories on IG.

At the end of the meeting, we had one last activity, this time via Mentimeter. We asked a simple question - What did they learn today?

The answers were varied, from the decomposition time of chewing gum - 5 years - to the fact that part of the waste is transported from Prešov to Kosit near Košice.

After Mentimeter, we did a quiz via Kahoot!. We gave books to the winners and Ms. Brzová surprised us with a gift from her side - canvas bags made of recyclable material with information on what waste to put in which.

We also created a platform for our participants, where they can find the presentation and individual shots from this meeting. So they can go through everything again and if they accidentally forgot something, they can quickly find it out.

With this, we would like to thank the partners of this meeting once again:

Kosit a.s., represented by Ms. Slávka Brzová,

Gymnázium Park mládeže 5 in Košice,

Gymnázium Konštantínova 5 in Prešov.

The education is supported by the European Solidarity Corps program, administered by IUVENTA - Slovak Youth Institute.
