From July 8th to 17th, we participated in a youth exchange project called MIRROR, focused on combating racism and promoting diversity. During these nine days, we discussed these topics with other participants, exchanged our experiences, and looked at these issues from different angles through various activities.

The project was divided into two parts, with the first focusing on learning about racism and discrimination as concepts and as real problems in the participating countries. In the second half, which began after our visit to Poggio Mirteto, we were to think about possible solutions to discrimination and their implementation.

During the first day of the project, we got to know the other participants. We did team activities aimed at learning each other's names and then building mutual trust, such as the blind snake game and the spiderweb. One activity led us to converse for 5 minutes with random participants, which served as an excellent icebreaker for the entire week.

Each day began with some form of energizer. Energizers were quick games that got us into a more creative and engaged mindset. They were usually games where reaction time was important.

The first part of the program included activities that led us to explore racism and discrimination in the education system, in everyday life, in the media, and institutional racism. We shared the situation in our country and listened about the other participating countries. Other exercises helped us empathize with people who are discriminated against based on race or other reasons. We thought about the difficulties they might face in their lives as we answered questions on their behalf.

The goal of the second part was to think about solutions to racism and discrimination. In one activity, we were presented with several situations involving some form of discrimination. In groups, we discussed what would be the best course of action as a victim and as a witness. We also set short-term and long-term goals and a strategy to achieve them. Then, each group presented their strategy to all other participants, and together we discussed the best types of strategies, real-life examples, and our experiences.

Communication in a foreign language throughout the project was a challenge. The ideas we tried to express were often difficult to explain even in our native language. It was also interesting to help other participants find the right words or collectively search for the correct expression online. Throughout the week, we became more comfortable speaking and thinking in English.

Our experience during the project undoubtedly advanced us in our language skills and in our ability to be a force against racism and discrimination. The idea spread throughout the project that if more people were aware of the problems faced by minorities, the fight against racism would be much easier. But in this way, the project achieved its goal. It turned a group of passionate young people into individuals dedicated to the fight, giving them the tools and know-how needed to make a change.
