You(th) decide II.
On June 19, 2019, despite the high temperatures, the You(th) Decide! training continued, focused on strengthening civic participation among young people from V4 countries. After a brief recap of previous activities and getting acquainted with new participants, members of academic senates, student councils, and representatives of the third sector, we delved deeper into the issue of civic engagement. Together, we climbed Rogger Hart's ladder of participation. We identified individual levels of participation that we reflect in our organizations, or in our community, and discussed the level of youth participation in the city of Košice.
In the second part of the meeting, we set about identifying the most serious problems that young people in the city of Košice reflect. The already challenging task was made more difficult by the assignment to find a common position on what these main problems actually are and what their order of importance is, first in pairs, then in smaller groups, and finally as a whole. The many passionate discussions showed us how often we talk about the same thing, just in different words. We also realized how difficult it is to reach a consensus within a set time limit and how important it is to give space to quieter group members. The individual activities, although primarily focused on the topic for which we met, subtly helped us develop our presentation skills. We practiced argumentation, persuasion, and especially the aforementioned search for a common position. During the next meeting on June 27, we plan to present the 4 identified problems of the city to its representatives, as well as to other so-called important adults, and invite them to a joint solution.
